Royal Castle Berchtesgaden
The Wittelsbach Family's Residence in Berchtesgaden
The Royal Palace of Berchtesgaden, which served as the summer residence of the Wittelsbach dynasty after 1810, was once the center of a small ecclesiastical state. Founded around 1102/1105, the Augustinian Canons’ Abbey subsequently gained imperial immediacy upon being granted the right to exercise capital punishment, and in 1559 attained the status of a prince-provostry. Until secularization in 1803, the monastery remained the residence of the local rulers. Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria lived here with his family and furnished the palace with his art collections. The tour of the museum spans three floors. The high-medieval origins of the complex are particularly evident in the cloister with its late Romanesque sculptural decorations.
