Hochschwarzeck mountain railway

As if painted by an artist’s hand against the blue summer sky, towering rock formations come into view: the Hohe Göll, the Hohe Brett, the Jenner, the Schneibstein, the legendary Watzmann massif, the Hochkalter with the Blaueis Glacier, and the Reiteralpen—a dreamlike mountain backdrop. After a leisurely rest on this magnificent high plateau or at the Hirschkaser mountain restaurant, it’s worth taking a 20-minute walk to the “Toter Mann” viewpoint. According to legend, a hiker from Ramsau set out during the winter months despite his friends’ warnings and met his death in a sudden snowstorm. Since then, the mountain ridge between Berchtesgaden and Ramsau has been called “Toter Mann.” One of the six stops on the Ramsau Legends and Fairy Tales Trail is also located there. From here, the view stretches far beyond the Berchtesgaden Valley all the way to the Mozart city of Salzburg.
